Costa Rica: 1.100 Lightning Strikes Per Day

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006

The Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) and the Instituto Meteorológico Nacional (IMN) say that in 2005 there were 436.000 discharges. This is about 1.100 lightnings per day.
No surprise, 70% of the electrical service failures are due to the lightning strikes. Also, 15 people died from lightning strikes in the last two years.
Lightnings occur also during the dry season, but are more often in the wet season. The report says that the most intense day time for lightning is around 6.00 pm.

Another interesting point is the geographical allocation of lightning discharges: the coast between Quepos and Puntarenas shows the most intense lightning activity, followed by the Nicoya Peninsula and Los Cerros de Aguacate.
Under the Zopilote Surf Camp roof, we enjoy this shows at the ocean almost every second night.
