Parque Nacional Santa Rosa

Close to the border of Nicaragua, you’ll find one of the bigger national parks of Costa Rica: el Parque Nacional Santa Rosa. Interesting for surfers: a 7 kilometer long beach with good surf conditions.
The National Park Santa Rosa is located in the North West of Costa Rica; therefore it is best reached via Liberia. Ticos know the place of Santa Rosa because of it significance for their history: in March 20th, 1856, Costa Ricans fought off an invasion army of american mercenaries at Santa Rosa.
The park itself is huge (around 50.000 hektar) and is home to a high number of animals and plants, many of them endangered. The most prominent inhabitans are probably sea turtles and jaguars.

But the park is best know for its flora. Within the range, there are different types of forest which can be studied “live”:

  • el bosque caduco
  • el bosque encino
  • el bosque siempre verde (evergreen forest)
  • manglares (marshland)
  • bosques riberenos (river forest)
  • bosques bajos
  • vegetacion de playa
  • las sabanas

Besides many hiking trails, one attractions stands out for surfers: the waters around witches rock. This well known place in Costa Rica among surfers is also target for many surfers from outside the country. Not far away from wiches rock you’ll find Ollie’s point at an river mouth, also an excellent spot to surf. This is only accessible by boat.

You can stay right in the park camping or renting small rooms. Check out this site (in spanish).
