Costa Rica - always an adventure

In the infinite of the web, we found a story about two youngsters from Florida who went to Costa Rica to join a conservation project (Read here more about such possibilities).

The two Florida girls lived with their host families and took spanish classes every day. Proyecto Asis is about inspiration, and no beach vacation at all. As one of the organizers of Proyect Asis said: ” It’s a great way to learn about the country and the people and the culture.”

The cultural shock was brief. They showered under a pipe with cold water. The only sink in the house was in the kitchen. And: birds, butterflies and even bats flew through their room.

But everything changed with time: “When they first got here, they seemed very shy,” their host mother, Sabrina Arce Guzman, said in Spanish. She then made an extra effort to include them in family activities.

The work as a volunteer included gardening, feeding animals and giving english lessons to kids:
“They thought they would just be helping out, but as soon as they got there the teacher left, so they had to conduct the entire lesson by themselves. They improvised something about animals and the months of the year.”

After 4 weeks of spanish classes, volunteering and making friends in Costa Rica, both will miss the country very much, but it’s their people they don’t want to miss at all: “First I thought a month was too long. Now, I don’t want to leave.”
