The difference of surf and soccer
Maybe all of us saw it, and maybe all of us have a different opinion about it. I’m not a big soccer fan, but caught the fewer a little bit during the world championships. Costa Rica left early, a nation disappointed. Brazil left very early, and high flying Argentina lost to the Germans. And then the Italians, lucky to get the gift against the Aussies, fighting their way to the finals.
And then the scene of the last weeks - Zidane’s butt-head against Materazzi. First, I thought such a stupid guy, felt victim to some calculated words. Hey, everyone who played baseball knows that: you come up to the plate and the catcher tries to distract you. Telling you stories about your girl friend. About your hair cutt. Or worse: about your surf.
Zidane lost his temper, and I understand that. Ok, I’m really curious about what Materazzi said, and maybe we will never know. But that butt-head kicked the Italian off his shoes, and I believe, the French don’t think the same as the official press à la ‘how could Zidana do that…’. They’re very proud about Zidane, although they lost the game and the championship, they showed everybody they might be old but not cowards.
Materazzi is a pro player and Italian. He knew exactly what to say to provoque Zidane. Materazzi will survive the butt-head easily (ha!), but he will be confronted with his words very soon. How far do you go to get it all?
And that’s difference - the waves a neutral, they are there or not. You surf and can’t blame anybody for your performance, except yourself (or a nearby shark). The wave is your judge, and the beach your theatre. That’s all and that simple. No butt-heads, no insults.
